Already a frontrunner in the use and technology of eID cards and eGovernment, Estonia is now offering a digital identity service available to Estonians and non-Estonians alike.
According to an eResidency pamphlet published by Estonia’s government, Estonia will begin issuing eResident digital identities before the end of 2014. Interestingly, these eResident digital identities – verifiable and secure – will be available to “anybody [Estonian or not] who wants to run their business and life [digitally].”
As Estonia’s government explain, “to obtain an eResident digital identity, applicants must visit [an Estonian police station] to submit an application and provide biometric data.”
